Chapter 18 — Beating One Percent of Computers Nationwide

“I told you ages ago not to live in that kind of place. It’s filthy!” Professor Li snapped. “If my son hadn’t been worried about you, he never would’ve gone to Ping’an Apartments to see you, and he never would’ve gotten dragged into some murder case.

If it wasn’t going to work out, you should’ve let him go. With a face like yours, is seducing men all you know how to do?

What exactly did you do to my son?

Only that foolish boy would vanish every few days, and whenever we asked, he’d say he’d gone to Ping’an Apartments. You may not have parents, but he does. Sang Ning, did all those years of education go straight to waste?

Don’t think we’re afraid of you just because you’re a police officer now!”

He clutched at his chest as he ranted. Sang Ning hadn’t said a single word, yet Professor Li had already said everything for her.

Even the officers beside them couldn’t stand listening anymore.

Gu Yezhou’s voice turned cold. “Professor Li, we address you as ‘Professor’ out of respect. This is a police station, not somewhere for you to throw a tantrum.”

Professor Li adjusted his glasses and finally gave Gu Yezhou a proper look. Seeing that he wasn’t in uniform, he snorted.

“And where did you come from, young man? Since you know this is a police station, what is an unrelated person doing here?

I want to see my son. Release my son. If you say he killed someone, then show me the evidence!”

Sang Ning waited quietly until Professor Li finished. While he caught his breath, she said mildly, “When did we ever say your son killed anyone? And when did I ever say I wanted to be with Li Xiaoqiang?

I think your eyesight really is failing, Professor. At your age, has your prescription gone up again?

Can’t you see there isn’t even half a connection between me and your son?

Forget dating him—I deleted his contact information long ago. Didn’t he tell you?”

She didn’t want to waste any more breath on Professor Li, so she glanced at the report in Gu Yezhou’s hand.

Gu Yezhou understood.

Turning to Professor Li, he said, “Your son won’t be leaving today. He is suspected of murdering Shi Li, a resident of Ping’an Apartments, and is now under arrest according to the law. If you truly care about your son, then as his father, you’d better not hide anything you know. Maybe then he’ll still have a chance.”

Li Xiaoqiang had rented out the entire third floor.

In any other apartment building, someone with Li Xiaoqiang’s family background wouldn’t have been able to afford it.

Not to mention the hidden-door renovation inside.

But Ping’an Apartments was different. The rent there was extremely cheap. A whole year cost only four figures.

“What nonsense are you spouting? My son couldn’t possibly kill anyone! Shi Li? We don’t even know him!”

Professor Li’s eyes flickered.

Clearly, he knew something.

“Heh.”

Sang Ning let out a soft laugh from the side, as if mocking his son.

And the thing Professor Li couldn’t stand most was anyone looking down on his son.

Back then, people had laughed for five whole years about how a medical school professor had a son who’d only graduated from vocational school.

How could he possibly swallow that humiliation?

If Sang Ning hadn’t had such a pretty face, did she really think a family like theirs would have looked twice at her?

Professor Li’s eyes widened with rage as he glared at her.

“It’s all because of you! If not for you, how would my son have ended up like this? If he hadn’t met you, he wouldn’t have failed to get into college!”

“Don’t pin your nonsense on me,” Sang Ning said. “When you tried to introduce Li Xiaoqiang to me, I was already working at the station. Stop trying to make your useless son sound important. You know exactly what he’s done, don’t you?”

She crossed her arms.

“Without your indulgence, would he have dared do any of this? Following me. Taking photos of me. I’m telling you, Li Rui—even if your son didn’t kill anyone, I’ll pursue this to the end by law.”

She had never been some soft, harmless woman.

She had only held back because Li Rui and Professor Chen both worked at the medical school. They saw each other often, and she didn’t want their relationship to sour because of her.

She didn’t want to make things difficult for Professor Chen.

But today—

She, Sang Ning, could not swallow this anger.

If she couldn’t endure it, then she simply wouldn’t.

“You!” Li Rui pointed at her with trembling fingers. “How dare you call an elder by name? You really are—”

Sang Ning had been abandoned by her parents.

If he wanted to say she had no upbringing, then truthfully, no one *had* raised her.

But the words lodged in Li Rui’s throat, neither going up nor down, choking him with frustration.

“Professor Li, we won’t waste any more time here.”

Gu Yezhou took the test report and entered the interrogation room.

Seeing this, Li Rui tried to follow, pointing at Gu Yezhou’s back and cursing. He didn’t resemble a medical school professor at all—more like a shameless street thug.

“Why are you stopping me? Didn’t you see him go in? Are you planning to use force on my son? I’m warning you—if my son loses even one hair, I’ll file a complaint against all of you!”

Sang Ning simply sat down at the side, watching Li Rui throw his fit.

She almost wished Mrs. Li would come too.

It would be livelier with both of them.

Who knew how long the commotion lasted. Eventually, Li Rui tired himself out and sat directly on the floor.

For a man his age, his body seemed surprisingly sturdy.

“Well, Professor Li, tired from shouting? Should I pour you a glass of water?” Sang Ning mocked.

Li Rui ignored her and turned away, scanning the officers coming and going for someone who looked authoritative—preferably someone who could put Sang Ning in her place.

Then he saw Old Chen come out again.

Li Rui remembered him. This was the man who had just handed that young officer the report.

He rushed forward and grabbed Old Chen by the clothes.

“Was it you? Was it your report? Were you the one who said my son is a murderer?”

“Murderer?” Old Chen looked baffled.

Only after meeting Sang Ning’s eyes and seeing her nod did he understand.

He pushed Li Rui away, but seeing they were about the same age, he didn’t dare use too much force in case the man fell and got hurt.

“You’re Li Xiaoqiang’s father? This is a police station. If you have something to say, go to the break room and say it properly. You’re a medical school professor, after all. What kind of example are you setting by making a scene like this?”

Old Chen’s voice was loud and powerful, instantly stunning Li Rui into silence.

Just like that, Li Rui was taken into the break room.

Strictly speaking, this kind of questioning wasn’t Old Chen’s responsibility, but Li Rui had latched onto him.

Sang Ning didn’t know what was said inside.

Seeing there was nothing else for her to do, she had just gone upstairs when she ran into Shen Chen.

His eyes lit up.

“Dr. Sang, since there’s no body to dig up today, how about we talk about Shi Li?”

Since it was related to the case, Sang Ning was naturally willing.

When she agreed, Shen Chen looked like an excited child as he hurried to a computer and turned it on.

They waited.

And waited.

Staring at the antivirus software’s boot-up notification on the screen, Shen Chen laughed dryly.

“Excellent. My computer has beaten one percent of computers nationwide.”

Sang Ning was long used to this kind of startup speed.

Her own computer was the same.

As long as it could write reports and print, she didn’t ask for much. Good enough was good enough.

Clearly, for Shen Chen, it was nowhere near enough.

“I’ll show you the comments under Shi Li’s Weibo. Look at this one.”

Shen Chen’s long fingers flew across the keyboard so fast they blurred. Sang Ning couldn’t even follow the movement.
