Chapter 22: Taking Responsibility—How Noble
Gu Yezhou held his coffee and leaned back in his chair. “What’s wrong? President Lin doesn’t remember?”
Sang Ning followed up. “Why does it look to me like President Lin doesn’t remember that his home cameras were broken at all?”
Beside them, the secretary’s eyes flickered. Her fingers tightened around the tablet until they turned pale.
“There’s been too much going on. Forgetting is normal.”
Lin Zedong smiled. “May I ask why the two officers came to see me? Surely this isn’t because of my brother. If you want to discuss anything, you can go to him.”
“Since you can’t prove you didn’t leave home on the night of the ninth, we’ll have to trouble President Lin to come with us.”
Gu Yezhou looked at him with a faint smile. The phone on the table vibrated from time to time.
After that one brief glance earlier, Gu Yezhou had already decided not to waste words with Lin Zedong.
Instead of going around in circles with a businessman, it was better to present the strongest evidence.
Originally, he had planned to chat casually while waiting for Xiao Zhang’s interrogation results, all while keeping Lin Zedong under watch.
If Lin Zedong left Yancheng under the excuse of a business trip, the police wouldn’t be able to detain him without evidence.
But things were different now.
“Officer, if you suspect me, just say so. I, Lin Zedong, take responsibility for what I do. For the sake of the Lin Group, I would never risk myself by doing anything illegal.”
Every word he spoke rang firm and righteous.
“Well said.”
Gu Yezhou even gave him an appreciative round of applause. “How noble—taking responsibility for what you do. I wonder, President Lin, after you hear this recording, will you still admit to it?”
Last night, when Lin Zedong had bailed Lin Zehui out, Gu Yezhou had briefly questioned him.
Regarding Shi Li, Lin Zedong had said outright that he didn’t know him.
If he didn’t know him, why had he asked Yang Tao to contact Shi Li?
Gu Yezhou placed his phone on the table and played an audio clip sent by Xiao Zhang.
The volume was just right—enough for all four people present to hear clearly.
Lin Zedong’s voice came from the phone.
“I’ll provide all the equipment. Since Shi Li likes this woman so much, he’ll definitely be willing to help her overcome any difficulty.”
Then came Yang Tao’s voice—the streamer Sensen, the one who had disguised himself as Sang Ning.
“What if I can’t do it? President Lin, I just want to ask… is this illegal?”
“I only just started my internship. I still have a long road ahead of me… Could we maybe change—”
Lin Zedong interrupted him.
“No. Either get out of the Lin Group, or complete the task and take the five hundred thousand. Whether you stay or leave afterward is up to you.”
At the mention of five hundred thousand, the recording fell silent for half a minute.
“All right. I’ll make sure President Lin is satisfied.”
The recording was short, but the names mentioned in it were crystal clear.
Lin Zedong’s expression changed. Beside him, the secretary’s eyes brightened slightly.
Sang Ning noticed the subtle shift but felt something was off.
“Didn’t President Lin say last night that he didn’t know anyone named Shi Li?”
Gu Yezhou tapped the table with one finger. “Why did this name come up in the work you assigned to your subordinate? And who is the ‘she’ you mentioned?”
Lin Zedong’s eyes flickered. Instinctively, he glanced at Sang Ning, then quickly looked away.
The panic on his face vanished almost instantly.
“This recording alone doesn’t prove anything, does it?”
Lin Zedong elegantly lifted his coffee and took a sip.
“Oh, I remember now. Isn’t Shi Li that fairly well-known online comic artist? No wonder the name sounded familiar. I merely asked my subordinate to imitate Shi Li’s art style. Is that illegal? As I recall, an art style doesn’t constitute plagiarism. Do criminal police even handle that kind of thing?”
“Lin Zedong, don’t try to muddy the waters in front of me. One recording isn’t enough? Then what about this?”
Gu Yezhou opened the test report Xiao Zhang had sent.
On Shi Li’s drawing board, aside from Shi Li’s own fingerprints, there was one belonging to Lin Zedong.
For an ordinary person, fingerprints might be hard to retrieve and compare. But someone like Lin Zedong, the head of a listed corporation, often signed contracts and pressed fingerprints on documents. Matching his prints was simple.
The moment Lin Zedong saw the report, his pupils contracted.
“If President Lin only ‘heard of him,’ why are your fingerprints on Shi Li’s drawing board?”
The man’s cold voice echoed in his ears.
Lin Zedong slumped back against the chair. A voice in his mind told him—
It was all over.
He was taken into the car by Gu Yezhou.
The female secretary stood silently to the side. She made no attempt to stop them. Instead, she asked, “President Lin, what about the follow-up work?”
“Work?” Lin Zedong’s eyes darkened. “For now, hand it over to my useless younger brother.”
“Understood, President Lin. I’ll contact Young President Lin immediately. As for your situation, I’ll make sure to contact the best lawyer.”
With that, the secretary turned and walked away.
Her back was so carefree, so utterly without reluctance, it was as if she wished Lin Zedong would never return.
“Your secretary has quite the personality.”
Since Gu Yezhou had to drive, Sang Ning could only sit in the back and keep watch over Lin Zedong.
Lin Zedong glanced at the secretary. “Interested in her?”
Sang Ning answered frankly, “She’s quite special.”
Lin Zedong exhaled. “Being noticed by a forensic doctor isn’t exactly a good thing. She’s an orphan the Lin family took in. Lin Shuyue.”
“So you watched her grow up? In a way, you’re like her older brother?”
Sang Ning propped her chin on one hand, watching the figure disappear from view.
Lin Zedong nodded. “You could put it that way. But she’s never called me that… Still, I admire her.”
On the way back, Sang Ning chatted idly, one question at a time.
“What do you admire about her? That she knows her place? That she doesn’t covet what she shouldn’t?”
Wasn’t that how wealthy families worked?
From the driver’s seat, Gu Yezhou said, “Dr. Sang, you should watch fewer short dramas. Not all wealthy families are like that. Though with the Lin Group, it’s hard to say.”
Lin Zedong’s fists tightened. He turned his face toward the window, then slowly loosened his hands again.
When they arrived at the station, Lin Zedong remained sitting in the car for a while.
“Got a cigarette?”
“Sorry, I don’t smoke. Want candy?”
Gu Yezhou pulled out a large box of candy from the car, as if it cost nothing.
All milk candies.
“No. If you’re hoping to get anything out of me, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. Everything can wait until my lawyer arrives.”
Lin Zedong was escorted away by two waiting officers.
Sang Ning glanced over, then asked with a smile, “Captain Gu, where did you get so much candy? Aren’t you afraid of cavities?”
Gu Yezhou was about to explain when Sang Ning continued, “I’m worried your teeth will go bad, and then you won’t be able to enjoy good food in the future. So I’ll reluctantly help you share the burden.”
And with that, Sang Ning shamelessly carried off the entire box.
What was a grown man doing eating so much milk candy anyway?
She’d take it. Share it around.
So the moment she entered the station, Sang Ning walked in front and handed two milk candies to every officer she met.
Before she even reached the forensic room, the candies were all gone.
